Army Control

hey guys, in this article I want to explain my personal view of how to control your army as
effective as possible. surely I'm not close to be a good DM player, I don't even know the
hotkeys for most buildings. but I can tell you with a good conscience, that I know every
unit stance/formation and I know which beats what of playing CS a pretty long time.
some of my hints or tactics will not be practicable / are useless in a DM game, yet I
think it might be interesting to know how to beat 40 paladins with 40 axes, how to
make sure to win every pretty equal battle, like 40 vs. 40 paladins. or how to freeze an
enemy's army!

I set the formations and stances of my army complete with (regular) hotkeys, its the
only way to be successfull with what you do, because you have to do it fast, else it will
just be a normal patrol and nothing special.

Regular hotkeys:

Formations
Line Q
Staggered E
Box W
Flank F

Stances
Aggresive A
Defensive D
Standground N
Passive O

Other
Patrol Z
Stop S

Important hints
- dont fight an enemy who is on a big hill! lets imagine a battle, where your enemy got 40 archers on a hill and you are attacking him with 40 of your archers. he will complete defeat you, while he will have 10-15 archers left. same with cavalary and inf. thats probably because your units cant fight properly after climbing a big ass hill Razz
- try to avoid battles, when your amount of army is obviously less than your enemy's! as an idiot example: (enemy)2 vs. 1(you) paladin, you might know the result. a better example: (enemy)40 vs. 20(you) paladins. with a proper army control your enemy might win the battle with 1-5 died units and NOT 20!

Infantery/ Cavalry
i personally, run my inf/cav on standground. like this i make sure that they dont follow one single enemy unit and get lost/split on the whole map. but thats not the main reason. run your paladins into your enemy's paladin army on standground and as soon as your inside(!) your enemy's army, change your stance to defensive and repatrol. you will notice your units will fight like crazy and kinda "break out of the prison". i guarantee that you will win the battle (if its quite euqal) with more than half of your units left. thats because you make sure that all of your units start fighting at the same moment, while ur enemy's pals are blocking each other ways and fight delayed. so far i have only seen mortal_share doing this. besides his great eco thats one of his keys to be top.

this needs a perfect timing, to know when to change stance to defensive and when to repatrol, which comes after doing this over and over again. by doing that theres also a chance to freeze your enemy's army. his units will stop fighting and just run around like crazy.

you noticed, your enemy is using this strategy, what now? how to counter?
check the picture below, we both ran our pals into each other, on stand ground. i flanked them quite before the battle. right now i change the stance to defensive and repatrol. my army surrounded him while his units where at one point and only had about 10 paladins fighting. i left the battle with 15 units left.

distracting enemy units
there is a pretty easy way to completly defeat your enemy's army. this strategy is used in AoC CBA and its called distracting enemy units. check the picture below.

as you see, i am distracting half of his army with 1 paladin. im still on stand ground, changing stance to defensive now would really suck. wait 1-2 secs untill you are pretty much inside.

he didnt watch his army and i have been fighting 40 vs. 30 long enough to leave the battle with 25 paladins left.

Archered units/ axes, mamelukes
an easy and effective way to use archered units in big battles is the mostly used line/standground formation.

lets take axes as an example, when they are in a good position, just stop them on stand ground. from now on you can only micro your paladins. run your paladins back so your axes dont get out of range. check picture below:

axe vs. axe
axes are weak. imagine a 40 vs. 40 axe war. if both players use line/standground formation it will be a pretty luck depending battle.
how to avoid luck? check pictures below, and remind, axes are weak!

for those, who still dont know why i said that axes are weak twice: if you have your axes crunched like player 2, his axemen will shoot on dead bodies! they are taking 40 shots to one of my man. even tho 7 shots would be enough. while i flank him and kill one by one. thats much more effective.

draging in archer battles
this is a pretty amazing strategy you might use in random civ games. set your light cavs on passiv and let them patrol on a short way. the shorter the way, the more your opponent will fail trying to shoot you. look how many arrows are besides my light cavs! light cav is the fastest unit in the game, champs or what ever will also do it, if you do it right.

i completly defeated enemy's skirms and lost 2 scouts and 4 skirms.

evil trick (40 axes own 40 pals)
you might remember i was talking about " not practicable" tricks. this is maybe one of it, but maybe not! if your enemy is stupid enough to fight this.

lets imagine, i see some enemy paladins coming to own my axes, i might aswell run back somewhere and probabaly lose some of my axes. but why not just fight if i can win the battle?

for this we need a straight line, like the crater in the picture below. buildings, water or trees will also do a good job. the point is to crunch your axes as much as possible and as fast as possible (2-3 secs)

first step, select your army and change their stance to passiv, if they are not on passiv, they will start attacking enemy units and you will not be able to set up a good crunch. patrol them straight into the crater.

second step, first repatrol

third step, second repatrol

your axes seem to be ready to fight, change stance to standground

40 axes owned 40 paladins. 11 axes left!

thats all so far, hope it can improve your gameplay and comment please!

AoK DM Strategy - Basics

Surviving the Rush

.If you are going to play against good players the first thing you must learn is how to handle the rush. In my estimation, the AoK DM rush is not as powerful as the AoE/RoR DM rush where forward building was a much more effective ploy. Painting barracks and stables all over the map is just not as sound a tactic in AoK due to the following factors:
  • Unbuilt foundations can be built over and crossed over preventing advancing villagers from building
  • Multiple villagers must be sent as packs of wolves will devour even a pair of villagers before they get to their destination.
  • Buildings take longer to build than in AoE/RoR - not much relatively speaking but putting more villagers on the job doesn't decrease the time to build as much as it did in AoE/RoR.
  • Unit queues and gather points allow you to train camels and horsemen and automatically route them to the opposing town.
Still, a Frankish paladin rush and/or a Chinese camel/cavalier rush can be deadly and on an open map it could be curtains for you quickly as even if you take the proper preparations, you can still be overrun - especially, if a rushing foe gets collaboration from an ally. Frankish paladins have 192 hit points, the Chinese get 3 extra villagers and their town center supports 10 population (all other civilization town centers only support 5 unit population) so these 2 civilizations as a rule are the "rush" civilizations, but any civilization in AoK can pull off a rush with a savvy and astute player at the helm. So, as a public service to all the arduous, aspiring learning deathmatchers out there, I am going to give you some tips on how to handle the initial onslaught. By following these simple steps, give yourself and your team better chances for victory.
  1. Your first villagers build orders should be for a house and for a set of stables/barracks. Stables for those civilizations that can train camels, barracks for those civilizations without paladins and camels. You need to build houses before additional town centers because of the time required to build a another town center. Put your 5th or 6th villager on an additional town center. As soon as barracks and/or stables are constructed, start queing camels, paladins and pikemen. I'm sure that most are aware that pikemen get bonuses against mounted units and are a lot more effective than their displayed statistics would indicate.

  2. Don't venture too far out to build your initial buildings. More time walking means less time building and greater time duration until you have adequate defensive forces. Also, don't build all the structures next to eachother - have a villager build a stable at 9 o'clock, and 2 others build a pair at 4 o'clock for instance. This is to ensure that if you get swarmed and lose some villagers and maybe even a stable or barracks, that you still have the ability to keep training units.

  3. Once you have a steady stream of villagers being created at multiple town centers, then you can dedicate villagers to towers and walls. Before you have more than one town center constructed, focus on military buildings and castles. Walls are not complete answers and you will want to put a gate in your walls for your units to be able to pass through and strike at enemy siege units, but they will slow an enemy down and keep your villagers collecting resources safe from danger. Bombard towers do the trick better, and even if you are playing a civilization that cannot build bombard towers, you can arrange several towers together to achieve the same defensive effect.

  4. After you lay your initial stables and barracks (4-6 total combined) get a couple of castles built. You will need some sort of siege soon as even if you repel the initial rush, a good player is going to have a castle with its trebuchet output in your neighborhood shortly. You also might see a wave of champions flood your town also, making your camels and pikemen useless. While your camels, paladins, and even infantry units can take down his trebuchets, you will need siege to eliminate the castles, towers, and town centers that will be popping up in the vicinity and archers and castle arrow fire to repel advancing champions.

  5. Stagger the location of your military buildings - erect a castle, houses, town center, and a few stables and/or barracks in the rear or flank of your town along with the ones you build in your town or near the frontlines. This way, even if you are overrun, you can retreat the surviving units from the frontline and merge them with recently trained units in the rear and launch a successful counterattack.

  6. Use the patrol command to give units an order to patrol an area for enemy presence. Watch your flanks and keep vigilant watch on the "backdoor". If your patrolling units discover the enemy, make sure your target any of their villagers first - only exception would be if their trebuchets were unpacked and inflicting damage on your towers, castles, or walls.

  7. Communicate with your allies. If you are battling against 2 enemy civilizations, let them know immediately. Even if they are ill prepared to come to your aid, this information may enable them to strike at the enemy helper civilization - if he has devoted a lot of resources at helping his ally at blitzing you, then that means he may have inadequate defensive forces at his own town.

  8. Sometimes the best defense is a good offense. If you are getting rushed, then you won't be able to rush your opponent from the direction he is attacking. But that doesn't mean you can't swing some ships around (on maps with some water) and land a transport ship or blast away at his town with cannon galleons. Or you can slide around the map edge and erect a few castles and stables next to his town. Or come at him from behind after taking a zigzag direction around him. Speaking from my own personal experience as a Chinese player putting the pressure on a foe early, I can say that a rusher sometimes is so focused on driving you back, he neglects proper defense setup or securing resources (i.e. mines ...) because he feels he is close to eliminating his opponent.

  9. Mine your gold and stone as quick as you can. With the new gather point feature - being able to assign "unborn" villagers miner duty before they are even created means there is no excuse for losing unmined gold. If you are fighting and replenishing your forces, you are going to need it soon enough. And if you're not using your resources, something is wrong - you should be fighting somebody somewhere as if you are not, your allied partners are taking abuse somewhere else.

  10. If your town is indeed taken, don't despair. If you followed all these pointers here, it is doubtful that you were completely annihilated, and if you were it probally was the effect of multiple foes combining their efforts on punishing you or just the random bad luck to start too close to a Chinese foe. Make sure you save what villagers you can and rebuild - take cover under protection of your allies - but get busy rebuilding your army and get those trade carts going as you're going to be in the hole as far as resources go and your allies arn't going to appreciate you mooching off of them for very long.
Good luck and I hope these little tips help your game. See you on the deathmatch battlefields.

AoK dM tips by Tragic Poser

AoK dM tips by Tragic Poser
Chapter 1

Basics: (If you're not a beginner then don't read this)

Ok so the games launched and your screen says multiplayer loading etc. it will then go cook for about 1 second or less this is when your gaming starts, as the screen goes cook press H shift C+C or Your Own hotkey.. to get villagers from your town center  when the image of the game appears your town-center should already be full with villagers. the first thing you do is send your scout to the enemy base then take one of your villagers and make a house and with the other two make a stable , set the rally point of your town center on to the stable being built , this is to make sure your villagers is idle for as cilantro time as possible.

To make sure that u can carry on doing this for your start and to improve the continuity of your start ,you should when your first stable is about 50 percent complete take one of the villagers on it and make about 7 or more stables around your town center      ( incase u didn't already know hold shift so u can make more than one building without having to keep clicking the building tool option) it is important that your stables are built close and around your town center as it cuts down the walking distance of your villager and allows extra safety from enemy rush, your town center rally point is very important and must keep switching it from building to building. make sure after your first stable is done that u only use one villager on each stable, this increases your build speed you will almost be 50 percent faster using the one villager on each stable technique, if you don't do this then u will get owned in rush as your enemy will have 8 stables when u have 4.
u must also make sure you have after about 4 stables or 5 stables complete at least two villagers making houses , use the same shift technique and spread lots of houses behind your base or to the sides.
whilst your 7 or more stables are being built devote some villagers to a early castle and barracks ( this helps you with pop limit incase you lose house villagers in rush and the pike man from barracks will help against rush and also help u get to full pop quicker.)

another very  important skill that is necessary is army production speed ( how fast you pump army from your buildings) try to picture in your mind that if you do not get paladin axe or pike from there buildings within 5 seconds of there completion then god will delete your base! this is one of the many things that determines who will win a game,, how fast your pump your army out.

ok well the above takes place in the time period of about 5-7 minutes in game depending on your speed.

next you need ECONOMY this is probably goes hand in hand as the most important thing in the game with military. you need to try to aim for 30 farmers in 15 minutes and 80 miners in 12 minutes its hard I know but u must keep trying or u will never be able to  do it. tips to help u reach these goals are the number of town centers you have , try to get 3 town centers around your main gold at 4-7 minutes again depending on your speed, and the same philosophy of god deleting your base goes to town centers, make villagers within 5 second of the town centers completion, make several other town centers around the map so u can start farming, gold should not be looked at as much more important than food you should try to do this at the same time, but remember do not sacrifice your army for your economy your only a noob there is a lot more to it all but this is all i can explain in writing , will post recorded games for you noobs to watch which is probably the best help you will ever get.

Chapter II

Army control:
ok remember patrol is your best freind but can be your worst enemy aswell, however u should always use it, when patroling with paladin you should not use spread but you should use flank( something i bet u dont use tayfun)just as the paladin are aproaching the enemy in there patrol just as they are about to meet pres "F" ( flank) these means that your paladin will be fighting to suround the enemy rather than fighting with a more individual style. however when you pull back you should press them back to normal stance this will take some time to get used to but u will see its advantages( fkank is also very effective when used in waves)

when patroling with your axeman keep on standby however if u are wininng the battle switch your axemen to attack patrol to finish them of. if you wish to retreat your patroling axemen then you should press stop " S" and then pull them out as u will minmise the amount lost during retreat as they dont go crazy.

Economy:

ok u all know the basics etc but to improve even more u need to be getting your 80 miners in 12 mins on the gold mines , this will mean when your first army is dead you can produce another much faster due to fast gold. you may not get 80 miners i dont usualy get 80 miners but u need aim for it.

never hoard your gold always use it try never to go above 1kgold again that is hard but in a fast intense match u need to be pumping out army all the time even while in a battle , to do so you need get hotkeys for " go to stables " " go to baraks " this will mean u go straight to your desired building to pump out army.

u should also be pressin your idle villy hotkey every 5-10 seconds depeding where u are in the game, also late in game listen very carefuly to the sounds of the game, everytime u here about 2 farms finishing press your idle villy button.

Rush:

when u send your scout kill as many vils as u can and try to pull your scout away before it dies so that u give your enemy something else to worry about, for an effective rush u must send your first two paladin straight to the enemy base if you still have your scout send him back throught your enemys base and using your scouts line of sight click his vilagers with your paladin going to his base, use the same strategy with your paladins line of site ( This is hard to explain in writing contact me if u dont understand )you should only need to rush with 3-4 stables anymore is usualy a waste of paladin and gold.

Raids:

when raiding you should try to only use 5 paladin on spread, this is to make sure u dont waste and so that it will take longer for your enemy to realise hes being raided , he will be more likely to see 50 paladin raiding rather than 5 paladin, u should also try to keep the paladin raiding alive for aslong as possible.....
